True Death
To be perfectly honest, as much as Napalm Death are considered a pioneering exponent of the Death Metal movement, I haven’t really bothered checking them out over the course of their career. But I was eager to shoot them tonight and break out of my gig-shooting lethargy which has seen me pretty much take the entire winter off from shooting live bands.
I needed a break and at the end of the day, I had to force myself to go and shoot Napalm tonight.
Photographically speaking, I wasn’t sure within me if I really wanted to pursue live music photography any longer. It is a thankless task, an incredible amount of work and currently for absolutely zero reward or compensation. It is basically a love job that I was beginning to hate.
But I hate surrendering so easily and as I got my second wind last night, I rushed and got ready and got myself to the Hifi Bar.
Funnily enough, I arrived at the same time as Napalm Death did so I rode their coattails somewhat and was escorted into the venue with them. Nice to make such a rocking entrance!
I caught the tail end of Dying Fetus’ set. Again, a band I am not too familiar with but they sure were tearing the Hifi a new one.
There was a bit of a wait between bands and the bouncers wanted us in the pit from the outset so I spent time catching up with fellow photog Anwar from Metal Obsession. Great lad, great bloke and a fine photographer in his own right.
Napalm hit the stage and I found it to be a bit of a struggle tonight. It had been three months since I shot live, and my chops were suffering. It was a hard night to get a decent shot. The lighting is always woeful at the Hifi Bar, quite possibly the worst in Melbourne but you just gotta make do I guess.
Hard night’s work. Rusty as hell. My worst shots ever!
