I only just found out about Church Of Misery’s Australian sojourn last week – funnily enough, I was in the middle of listening to their latest release ‘Thy Kingdom Scum’ as my Facebook news feed brought up the info on the band’s Aussie tour!
I had to shoot this one! So upon doing some minor detective work and finding out who the promoter was, I had secured a photo pass within minutes of finding out about the gig.
I had the choice to either shoot them at the Hifi Bar (boo, hiss!) or do the Sunday night gig at the Tote.
I hadn’t shot at the Tote for a long time and never an international act so I decided on the Tote gig.
Church Of Misery were touring Australia as part of the Doomsday Festival. Although there were some fine bands on the bill, I was only interested in photographing these guys so I arrived at the venue just as they were setting themselves up.
I had a nice surprise at the ticket booth when the girl granting me access said to me she was a fan of my work. Nice little moment as it is so cool being acknowledged for one’s work.
Oh and kudos to the merch stand which had some of the best prices I have ever seen! $20 for a t-shirt and $20 for a double-vinyl… hell yeah, take my money please!
The Tote filled to the brim as the Church were about to hit their first notes of doom-laden-stoner-sludge-serial killer-Black Sabbath-inspired rifferama!
The band looked like total Rock Gods up on that stage like lost relics of the 70′s and they sounded superb as they smashed out a bludgeoned collection of killer tracks from their, so far, impressive catalogue.
